Lagos:Manace of Street Trading

Call Street trading in Lagos mannace you will be absolutely right , despite their effort of Government past and present the practice of display if wares on major roads still persist.

Past administration introduced some measures to eradicate this practice like Kai police that go about their City implemente environmental laws, they usually make arrests,  seize wares and fine traders.

Another effort was the low cost stall built in some strategic locations like Oyingb market, thought they question is how low cost are this stalls as traders involved are petty with minimal capital and it's doubful of they could afford rentage of such shops.

To wworsen the case, some Local government agents collects street trading levy from these petty traders which seem to give them credibility, a step seeing as counter productive to get this trader off the road.

Evils in street trading

1. Environmental pollution and attendant health implications.

2. Contribute to traffic situation as wares are displayed on their road.

3. There have been cases of fatal accidents.

4. A veritable way of selling most face products.

5. It helps to perpetuate child abuse

Government need to so more to curb street training in major location by looking inward and address this problem in a more humane manner a way could be creation of community maker spaces into which street traders could be moved.

Government should note that street trading is a sign poverty, low per capita income, high level of unemployment and subsistence nature of most citizens as such creation of more technical and skill acquisition centers across the state,  promotion of agriculture and other non oil sectors will help improve general standard of living and get people off the road.

If citizens are not provided a reasonable alternative it is doubtful if Government will ever succeed in moving people off the read.
